DescriptionStem from thick, woody, dark, purplish-brown caudex; basal leaves interruptedly pinnate, with many, often crowded, more or less lobed leaflets, pubescent above, glabrous beneath; stem puberulent; stem leaves with few, acute lobes; flowers 1-3; bractlets ovate, acute, shorter than the ovate-triangular, acute calyx lobes; petals yellow, large, broadly obovate, more or less emarginate; nutlets pubescent, with glabrous style.
EcologyDry, stony places, snow beds. Broken line on circumpolar map indicates ranges of very closely related taxa.

UsesThe rhizome is eaten raw, usually with fat, by the Siberian Eskimo.
