DescriptionStems 2-3 mm thick at base from elongated rhizome, creeping in mud; leaves pinnate, usually 5 in a whorl, much longer than internodes; flowers in axis of pin- nate to pectinate bracts, longer than flowers; pistillate flowers lacking petals, stami- nate with 4 greenish petals; stamens 8.
EcologyPonds, sluggish streams. Described from Europe.

Propagates by clavate turions with closely appressed leaves. Two varieties occur: var. pinnatifidum Wallr., with long bracts; and var. pectinAitum Wallr., with bracts only slightly longer than the flowers.
