Description | Forming dense tussocks; leaves grayish-green, linear; scapes pubescent; flowers in hemispherical glomerules, supported by ovate-lanceolate involucral bracts; flowers in 2-3-flowered spikelets, subtended by bracts; calyx pubescent only on veins, glabrous between; petals pink to purple, much longer than calyx. | ||
Ecology | Common on cliffs along the sea, rare inland. A. maritima described from England, subsp. arctica from Unalaska, Shishmaref Bay, Cape Espenberg, and St. Lawrence Bay (in Siberia). | ||
Taxonomy notes | In northern Alaska, transitions can occur exceptionally to subsp. sibirica Turcz., with calyx pubescent also between the veins. Range of the entire complicated spe- cies complex is marked on the circumpolar map. |
