DescriptionStem from oblique, branched caudex, covered on upper part with translucent old sheaths, viscid-pubescent with long, septate hairs; basal leaves pinnate, with numerous, more or less alternate, elliptic-ovate to obovate leaflets; inflorescence more or less capitate, few-flowered; flowers short-pedicelated, about 1.5 cm long; calyx densely pubescent with somewhat acute lobes; corolla blue to purplish, about 2.5 times longer than calyx, with rounded lobes, glabrous in margin.
EcologyMeadows, sandy, dry tundra; to at least 2,300 meters in the St. Elias Range.

Alpine specimens (var. villosissimum Hult.), found on tundra and in the moun- tains, are about 6-7 cm tall, with globular, strongly white-villous inflorescence.
