DescriptionStem from slender, branching rhizome, puberulent and stipitate-glandular; basal leaves narrowly elliptic-lanceolate, acute, dentate, long-petiolated; lower stem leaves peduncled, the upper reduced, sessile; involucrum puberulent and densely glandular; involucral bracts lanceolate, acute, densely glandular; ligules 10-20 mm long, yellow; disk flowers pilose; achenes uniformly hispid; pappus white, barbel- late.
EcologyDry, open places. Described from the Athabasca River.

The. Alaskan plant belongs to subsp. lonchophylla; broken line on circumpolar map indicates range of subsp. chionopappa (Fern.) Maguire (A. chionopappa Fern.) in eastern North America and subsp. arnogléssa (Greene) Maguire (A. arnoglossa Greene) in the north-central United States.
