| Description | Caespitose; culms geniculate, 15-20 cm tall; cauline leaves 2-3 mm wide, nearly smooth, slightly purplish-tinged; ligules 0.8—1 mm long; panicle many-flowered, somewhat drooping, with 2—-3 scabrous, slender branches, floriferous nearly to base from each node; spikelets linear-oblong, glossy; bracts strongly erose-ciliate, thin, translucent; first glume broadly ovate, obtuse, 1-nerved, the second suborbicular, obscurely 3-nerved; lemmas broadly ovate-truncate, obscurely 5-nerved, sparsely pilose on nerves below; keels of palea sparsely spinulose at apex; anthers 0.6-0.8 mm long. | ||

| Taxonomy notes | Some of the specimens from our area of interest belong to var. paradéxa Sgrens., with nerves of glumes and lemmas evident, subcarinate glumes, and greenish panicle, whereas others belong to a closely related “western American” variety (Sgrens.) with nerves of glumes and lemmas obscure, no carinate glumes, and purplish panicle. |
