DescriptionForming compact tufts; culms smooth, up to 80 cm high; old basal sheaths long- persistent, blades early disarticulating; basal leaves numerous, stiff, filiform, highly scabrous; 1-2 cauline leaves with short, broader blade; panicle open, with thin, scabrous, branched branches, bearing spikelet toward ends; spikelets 2-5 flowered; glumes broadly lanceolate to ovate, acuminate; lemmas 5-nerved, purplish-brown or sometimes yellowish-green (f. pallida Jordal).
EcologyVery common, with wide ecological tolerance, from sea level to at least 2,200 meters in mountains. -
