DescriptionDensely caespitose; culm with purplish, bladeless sheaths at base; leaves flat, 2—-3 mm broad; spikes 3-5, cylindrical, 1-2.5 cm long, the lowest longer-stipitated than the upper, the apical with pistillate flowers above, staminate below, the lateral pistillate, sometimes with staminate flowers at extreme tip; lowest bract as long as inflorescence, or longer; scales elliptical, somewhat acute, brownish-black, narrower than perigynia; perigynia broadly ovate, grayish-green, indistinctly nerved, with short beak; 2 stigmas.
EcologyWet places, gravel bars.
