EcologyShaded woods. Described from Virginia and Canada.

Alaskan specimens, which belong to var. amplexicaulis (Nutt.) S. Wats. (8. amplexicaulis Nutt.), have leaves with dilated, clasping petioles. Circumpolar map indicates range of entire species complex.
