DescriptionShrub or tree, up to 3-4 meters tall; twigs reddish, shiny, glabrous; leaves ellip- tical or elliptic-lanceolate, acute, usually finely and regularly serrate in the entire margin, minutely sericeous beneath, with short, white, appressed hairs; catkins ap- pearing with leaves, with 2-3 small leaves on the short peduncle; capsules pubes- cent; bracts blacklsh pubescent; styles about 0 8 mm long; stamens 2; filaments glabrous
EcologyAlong streams, in woods, in the Yukon to at least 1,200 meters. Described from Prince Albert Sound, Rae River, Labrador.

Plants with leaves nearly glabrous below (var. glabra Anderss.) and with less ser- rulated leaf margin probably represent hybrids with S. pulchra (no. 48, above). (See color section.)
