DescriptionShrub up to 4 meters tall; twigs smooth; leaves sessile or nearly so, narrowly lanceolate to linear, glabrous or sometimes sericeous [f. Wheéleri (Rowlee) Rou- leau (S. interior var. Wheeleri Rowlee) ], entire in the margin when young, later with widely separated teeth; catkins on leafy peduncles; bracts pale yellow, decidu- ous; capsules silky, glabrate in age, on pedicels 1.5 mm long; stigmas sessile.

Described from the upper Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes, and the eastern slope of the Allegheny Mountains. Most specimens belong to var. pedicellata (Anderss.) Ball (S. longifolia pedicellata Anderss.), with very narrow leaves, usually not over 6 mm wide.
