DescriptionUpright shrub up to 2.5 meters tall, forming brush-wood; young twigs densely dotted with resin spots; petioles puberulent; leaves 1-2 c¢m long, somewhat glutin- ose, glabrous, dark green above, yellowish-green beneath, crenate except near the cuneate base; bracts with resiniferous hump on back at maturity, 3-lobed, the me- dian lobe longer than the lateral; nutlets with narrow wings often broader toward apex.

Forms complete introgression with B. nana subsp. exilis where ranges overlap, as well as hybrids with the tree birches—usually tall shrubs, but sometimes small trees with larger, more or less rounded, more or less crenate-serrate leaves.
