DescriptionStem viscid-pubescent above, usually up to 20 (occasionally 30) cm tall; basal leaves linear-lanceolate to oblanceolate, more or less pubescent, especially in mar- gin; stem leaves in 1-3 pairs, narrow, smaller than the basal leaves; flowers single (rarely 2), drooping when young, erect in fruit; calyx ovate, viscid-pubescent; calyx inflated also when young; petals lilac, slightly longer than calyx; seeds large, light brown, with broad wing.
EcologyDry, grassy slopes in the mountains. M. apetalum described from Lapland and Siberia, subsp. arcticum from Spitzbergen.

Var. glabrum Regel, a local race with robust growth, petals about as long as the calyx, and nearly glabrous leaves, occurs on St. Paul Island. Broken line on circum- polar map indicates range of subsp. apétalum in Scandinavia, and of other closely related taxa in the southern mountains.
