DescriptionStems mostly single from thick rootstock; basal leaves oblanceolate to cuneate- obovate, sharply 3-toothed to several-toothed, tapering to broad petiole, glabrous to hirsute with coarse hairs, ciliate; stem and inflorescence glandular-pubescent; sepals oblong, reflexed, in age purplish-tipped; petals white or purplish, dimorphic, the larger with yellow spots; filaments subulate; ovary superior.
EcologyWet rocks. Described from cultivated specimens.

Var. Macounii Engler & Irmsch. has bulblets in the axils; var. Newcombei Small is coarse and markedly hirsute, and has large flowers.
