DescriptionStem hollow, simple, stout, up to 1 meter tall, or sometimes slender, low; leaves ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, undulate, shallowly pinnatifid or grossly dentate; inflorescence dense, villous or woolly; ligules short, yellow; pappus white, much longer than seeds.
EcologyWet places, in the lowlands; locally common.

Extremely variable. Specimens from the arctic are low-growing, coarse and very woolly (var. congéstus), whereas most others are taller and less densely pubescent [var. palastris (L.) Fern.]. Specimens with scattered hairs on stem and leaves also occur (var. ténsus Fern.).
