DescriptionSimilar to subsp. atropurpureus and with stout rhizome, but stouter; upper part of stem and involucrum densely brownish, floccose-tomentose.
EcologyOn tundra and in the mountains to at least 1,750 meters.

In var. dentatus (Gray) Hult. (S. frigidus var. dentatus Gray), the leaves are more or less coarsely dentate.
